PALM DESERT – Today, Senator Jim Battin (R
– La
Quinta) proudly announced that November is “California Indian Heritage
Month.”
November was so designated by
the passage of Battin’s SCR 45, which also honors the culture,
heritage, and
the contributions of
California’s Native Americans.
Senator Battin has been well known as an
advocate and
protector of Indian sovereignty in the state and legislature for many
years.
“California’s Indian nations have made
tremendous
contributions to the strength and diversity of our society, and tribal
self-determination
continues to be a top priority of mine. Recognizing
their historical and current achievements
is important, and I am honored to have once
again carried this important resolution,”
commented Battin.
The resolution, passed unanimously by the
legislature, was chaptered by the Secretary of State on July 5, 2007. Battin has authored this
resolution for the
past 5 years, to recognize the significant impact that Native Americans
have
had on California’s economy, history and culture.
“California’s Indian nations are a vital
part of our
society,” Battin said. “The number of tribal owned businesses is
rapidly rising
and their
commitment to family and community has had an immeasurable and
positive effect on our state.”
Senator
Battin also encourages government agencies, educators, museums,
churches and the people of California to honor this observance
with positive activities that celebrate our uniqueness as
Americans.
